Pay Per Click
Search Engine Marketing is also called Pay Per Click. (PPC)
If you have ever entered keywords into Google to search out a company that sells gift baskets, for example, then you have probably seen a few entries at the top and down the right side of the results page sporting pastel backgrounds. These entries are sponsored ads, meaning that the owners of these businesses have decided it is very important for their business is to be the first, second, third, or tenth on Google. The advertiser gets the top spots on the first page, but only pays Google for the advertising when someone clicks on their ad and goes to their website. The bookkeeping is all done behind the scenes by Google.
This is accomplished through a very complex process which essentially allows companies to bid against their competitors for the top spots on the search engines. Companies can determine their maximum budget: a limit to how much they want to spend daily, weekly or monthly for their clicks. Click costs can range from 1 cent to infinity depending upon the popularity of the key words.
